The Key to Growing 4c Natural Hair
How Do You Soften 4c Natural Hair?
As we’re sure you’ve read, there are several benefits to steaming. The steam opens the hair follicle allowing your conditioning treatments to penetrate the shaft. This means a more supple, moisturized head of hair - hooray!
When I first started steaming, I saw lackluster results. It worked but I just didn’t get all the hype. A few months later, the ladies at Cole Stevens salon helped me identify a few small tweaks that would take me a long way. Today, my steam treatments yield voluminous and soft curls. I don’t need to moisturize as often during the weekdays, which translates into more time spent on my hectic to do list.
Time well spent? Try these small adjustments:
Expose the ends of your hair. Because I wash my hair in sections for a deep clean, it’s easy to pin up those sections when I steam. Try pulling your hair to the top of your head so that it receives ample steam - after all the ends of your hair are more vulnerable to breakage. It does them no good tucked away or sitting on your neck!
Wash first, steam later. A steam treatment is most effective on a clean scalp. The products you choose are not effective if it cannot penetrate your shaft on account of product build up. Your hair needs a clean slate to absorb the nutrients of your conditioner, unhindered.
Ditch the shower cap. The purpose of the steam is to penetrate the hair shaft with moist heat. During your steam treatments opt out of the shower cap for a more effective treatment.
Steam regularly during winter. The dry, harsh elements can be unforgiving on your strands. There is less moisture in the atmosphere, meaning you have to go into overdrive to maintain hydrated curls. During the winter season, consider accelerating your steam treatments on a weekly or biweekly basis. Careful not to overindulge on moisture without a strengthening protein treatment!
Its best to listen to your hair during these fluctuating temperatures. If you experience excessive dryness a steamer or hot shower sans shower cap could be your answer.
Our favorite hair steamer is the Secura S-192 Hair and Facial Steamer due to its affordability and effectiveness! Tell us your experience - how have steam treatments affected your hair health? Leave a comment below.
