Carnegie School of Home Economics and Ruby Sampson Announce Collaboration to Train the Next Generation of Seamstresses

Washington, D.C. Today the Carnegie School of Home Economics (CHSE), Georgetown, Guyana and Ruby Sampson, Washington, DC United States are excited to announce the collaboration to sponsor the Garment Making Certificate program at CHSE.

“As a small business, we’re committed to the economic health and stability of our communities,” said Ashley Powdar, Founder of Ruby Sampson. “We recognize skillsets are the future currency in the global marketplace, but to build a pipeline of talent we must first close the skills gap. That’s why Ruby Sampson is thrilled to collaborate with CHSE in training the next generation of seamstresses.”

The collaboration includes:

  • Tuition sponsorship for awardee in the Garment Making 1 certificate program for the full academic year
  • Industry-standard equipment for classroom instruction and student use
  • Technical assistance and training in the disciplines of garment making, including but not limited to:
    • Designing, drafting, cutting and sewing garments and accessories using industrial machines and equipment,
    • Understanding specialty fabrics and best practices,
    • Calculating garment costs and retail value.

The 2021 World Economic Forum’s Future of Work Report casts an urgent focus on upskilling and reskilling workers to offset the growing skills gap and aging workforce. There are an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide affected by a skills mismatch, and since the pandemic “nearly one-quarter of youth ages 18 to 24 stopped working, and many others had their hours and income slashed, likely because they were working in highly affected sectors.” It's important now more than ever for educational institutions and employers to align curriculums with job opportunities.
